Carl Gawboy Arts, Host Artist

Carl Gawboy, a Boise Forte Anishinaabe/Ojibwe and Finnish artist and master storyteller, developed his own painting style with a commitment to honest depiction of everyday Ojibwe rituals of sugaring, ricing, canoeing, and harvesting.
He has been referred to as the “Ojibwe Norman Rockwell” because his paintings show the real lived experience and history of the Ojibwe people. Carl has created a vast amount of work over the years that includes watercolor, acrylic, and oil paintings, woodblocks, print pencil and ink drawings, and illustrations.

My work is a mix of handmade creations made with embroidery thread, beads, and wire. Since 2018 I’ve been creating jewelry and keychains with thread by learning how to make them from YouTube videos and following patterns I find online! This used to be just a fun hobby of mine, until I started selling 3 years ago on Etsy. I have recently started branching into beadwork, making flowers and bouquets The creations I make with embroidery thread are called “friendship bracelets” or “knotted bracelets”; made by weaving and knotting strands of embroidery thread together, and creating different types of knots by following a pattern. The beaded flowers I make are created by putting beads onto wire and twisting the wire into different shapes to create various types of flowers! I have always been interested in art since I was a child, but making jewelry is what really puts my creative mind to work. The amounts of different color combinations and patterns to make are never ending. I love that I get to create these colorful pieces for others to enjoy.
