I usually start with a reference photo I’ve taken of the scene. I reverse it, and use it to sketch the image onto my linoleum. Then I carve and simplify it as I go until I have something that captures the spirit of the place. Then I ink with oil-based ink and use my book binding press to create prints of the image. I take my work from three distinct sources: objects, people, and places. I find the act of carving to be immensely satisfying. It takes an inherently two dimensional medium and gives it texture. The process of carving changes what you imagine into what the medium will allow- more stylized, crisp but also imprecise. It also gives an image a tactile quality. As I work, I can feel the image and engage a sense that otherwise would never be able to “see” a place as I can with my eyes.

Patti Johnson, Guest Artist

I am a mixed media artist born and raised in Two Harbors, MN along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Creativity has always been my second nature, but my real passion for art started in my twenties. I love creating one of a kind original hand-made fluid artwork. Various technique are used to achieve each unique piece! I draw inspiration from the nature that surrounds us. The art I am most passionate about is called fluid art or acrylic paint pouring. I teach fun paint pouring classes, which include both wall art and functional art, several times per week in my art studio. I also teach advanced fluid art classes such as alcohol ink, botanical abstract art, intuitive abstract art, bloom technique and Dutch pour, just to name a few.
