Chrissy Gildersleeve, Host Artist
Chrissy Gildersleeve has worked to create functional pottery evoking nature through color and form. Her work creates beauty through modern simplicity one can hold in their hands. Muted, organic earth tones are intended to elevate the objects held within each vessel.

I create sterling silver talisman jewelry inspired by nature and the kindred human spirit. Each piece is hand fabricated and forged using traditional silversmith techniques, often accented with stones and mixed metals.

The natural world, and human beings as parts of that world, are the primary motifs of my work. A reviewer described my work this way: “ ‘Living Room’ imparts the sense of home the artist feels in the woods and on the waters of her ancestral region of boreal forest on Lake Superior, where the many senses of ‘living’ and ‘room’ can unfold. . . . Unlike many recent takes on ‘nature’ as a presence troubling to suburban sensibilities, this show embraces the otherness of the wild world and issues an invitation to enter it.” I am a writer and editor as well as an artist. I see my role as part border scout, patrolling new realms, and part communicator, bringing the news of those places into forms that people can use.

Art Focus: hand-cut cabochons for jewelry artists, custom cut cabochons for customers who have their own material, face polishing specimens and Lake Superior Agates (LSA’s) for tumbling rough and specimen collection. On occasion I metalsmith jewelry to better understand the needs of the artists I cut stones for as well as appreciate the creative process from start to finish.
Materials: I personally find most of my own Lake Superior Agates and other local regional material. When sourcing non-local materials I aspire to buy directly from the miners or reputable vendors who sell slabs and rough. Passion: the stones…seeing how they inspire jewelry artists to create pieces to be adorned for generations to come. Purchasing handmade jewelry with hand-cut cabochons supports two artist and fosters the spirit of both lapidary and jewelry art. Goals: to spark joy and creative inspiration for jewelry artists and customers; to expand common knowledge and draw attention to the beauty and technical aspects of this art form; spur dialogue about ethical sourcing, artistic process and value.
