I am inspired by the world of nature and specifically the north shore where I have made my home. When I go hiking or paddling there are almost always moments of transcendent beauty and connection. Some of these moments lend themselves or perhaps shout to me to be painted, shared, revealed. My oil paintings are done from life, photos taken, and memory.

I’ve been in the arts for most of my life. At age ten, I became fascinated by big needles and loops of yarn. The circle of elders at the local yarn shop guided my fingers and encouraged me to enjoy and explore. I learned to knit by watching and doing. Years later after formal training in design, painting and printmaking, I established a career in graphic design. I loved the hands-on experience of markers, pens and drafting tools. I later transitioned to computer work, learning new skills. I took direction from clients for their advertising. But on my own time, I would retreat to the simple pleasure of yarn in my hands, responding to my own plan. Today from my rustic cabin near Finland, MN, I celebrate the tones and textures of Lake Superior’s seasons. I photograph the beauty of our woods, shore and sky – then use these personal images as inspiration for my hand-knitted creations. First, I pair a favorite photo with luxury yarn from my stash of merino, cashmere and silk. Then I design and knit what I love. That means lots of color! My hats, scarves and wraps are wearable art – with modern Nordic flair. Most of the year, knitting is a solitary adventure. My favorite place is the porch, where I sit in a rocking chair that looks a bit like a snowshoe. I’m surrounded by vibrant yarn and buckets of stones I’ve collected. I never tire of the routine: coffee, clicking needles, creativity. All savored with a view of Sawmill Dome. While I enjoy the quiet company of yarn and needles, I look forward to meeting other artists and visitors. I knit what brings me joy, with the wish that its recipient will find their own warm connection in color and fiber.
